Rally to save the Snowy Hydro scheme - Tuesday 6 June
The NSW government is currently moving to sell the Snowy Hydro Scheme. As well as making no economic sense, this sale will take away the public's control of our water supply and further the trend towards private ownership of public water. A rally will be held in Sydney on Tuesday, 6 June at 12:30pm. If you want to get involved, you can download the flyer or petition from the websites of Greens MLCs Ian Cohen and Sylvia Hale at http://www.iancohen.org.au/ or http://www.sylviahale.org.au/
In particular, we are looking for people to leaflet train stations in the city (or anywhere you are) at lunchtime on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday, and in the morning on Monday and Tuesday next week. If you can help out please contact us on 0425 249 948 or benraue@nsw.greens.org.au

Rescue the Senate
by Ben Oquist
Getting rid of John Howard does nothing to alter the dynamics in the Senate. Rescuing the Senate from one party's control is the greatest progressive challenge in the lead up to the next election. More important than who is Prime Minister – Howard, Costello, Beazley, or Rudd - is who controls the Senate. It is that dynamic that will most shape Australia.
Imagine the conservatives having another term with the Senate under their control. The current wave of reforms will look like a picnic. And even if the ALP were to win this election or the next, how many progressive initiatives would pass the parliament if the Coalition still had Senate control?
Yet imagine a Senate with the Greens – not Family First or Barnaby Joyce – in balance of power after the next election. We would see a wealth of positive progressive initiatives, ideas and debates taking centre stage in Australian life.

West Papua, refugees and Australia
6PM for 6.30 PM start Thursday, February 16, 2006
Eastern Avenue Lecture Theatre
Level 1 Eastern Avenue Complex
The University of Sydney
On 16 January 43 asylum seekers from West Papua arrived in Australia
fleeing persecution by the Indonesian military. They are now detained on
Christmas Island. West Papua was invaded by Indonesia in 1962. As in
East Timor, the West Papuans have been brutally repressed and their
struggle for independence has been ignored by the Australian government.
This is a public forum and discussion about how to support the West
Papuans featuring:
Emeritus Professor Stuart Rees, Director, Centre for Peace and Conflict
Studies
Australian Greens Senator Kerry Nettle, recently visited the asylum
seekers on Christmas Island
John Wing, co-author of recent report "Genocide in West Papua? The role
of the Indonesian state apparatus and a current needs assessment of the
Papuan people."
A Video Statement from asylum seeker leader Herman Wainggai filmed on
Christmas Island and John Wing's photos from his visit to West Papua
will also be screened.

The Desalination Campaign
Sydney is facing a water crisis and the NSW government has finally decided upon a resolution. So why are the Greens part of an anti-desalination campaign?
by Diana Popic
Despite opposition of 70% of Sydneysiders to the desalination plant, the NSW government has decided its construction will commence in late 2006. The NSW Greens and the University of Sydney Greens on Campus have united with the Nature Conservation Council of NSW, Total Environment Centre, Cleanup Australia, Sutherland Shire Council and other groups to stop the ‘desal’ plant. The recently launched Sydney Community United against Desal (SCUD) are promoting and encouraging the government to turn its taps to water conservation, harvesting and reuse mechanisms.

Bleeding Nursing Dry - 25 November 2005
At the end of July Sydney University Nursing Society handed out a questionnaire to students at the Faculty of Nursing at Sydney University about conditions on our campus. We had 239 responses with some shocking results.
In response to all of this we made a booklet called 'Bleeding Nursing Dry', which goes into issues surrounding funding, the state of Indigenous Health, VSU for Nursing students, and also explores the results from the questionnaire. We invite you all to come to the launch of the booklet, as the first step in our campaign around these issues on the 25th of November at 4pm in the Anderson Stuart Building courtyard in Sydney University. It's the building
between Fisher and Manning. Speakers for the afternoon will include Senator Kerry Nettle, Greens Health Spokesperson; Tanya Plibersek, member for Sydney; Robyn Maloney, NTEU branch president for UWS and also head lecturer in the Nursing faculty there, and someone from the NSWN.
